how does the competition happen?

Most institutions conduct intra-school competition in debate and speech to select the best team. Select intra-school/college/institution/university activities aimed at sending the best teams to Verbattle involve participation of thousands of students.

Schools/Colleges/Institutions/Universities that have previously participated take extra care to prepare their students after the selection.

zonal clamber

A team would consist of two members/participants. An institution is allowed to send a maximum of five teams per category, that is, Beginner, Kannada, Junior and Senior.

The teams are restricted to five, only to facilitate room for more institutions to participate from all the zonal/regional centers. More than five teams per institution are entered in the competition only if the registration is done in advance with a request for the same. The Zonal Clamber itself will mark the beginning of the competition.

The teams will have to prepare both ‘for’ and ‘against’ the clamber level debate statements announced by Verbattle online, 7-10 days prior to the competition/championship.

The purpose would be to select the top 81 teams based on the right combination of the team. This combination includes a sense of teamwork, argumentation, presentation skills, body language, voice, knowledge, vocabulary, attitude, time management and engagement of the audience. The combination will be referred as Verbattle Essentials hereafter. (Refer to Verbattle Essential Elements Section for detailed information)

The Judges’ Panel consisting of three to five members, in consultation with the Chief Moderator, or the designated moderator, will deliberate and decide the winners per debate as per the judging guidelines of Verbattle. They will ensure that the selected teams qualify based on not just a few but the required aptitude in all the Verbattle essentials. Please refer to Criterion for Selection section for detailed selection process.

The Skirmish Level will be held in Bengaluru with a total number of 81 teams. Teams for the debate will be announced 24-36 hours before the event. Students need to be completely aware, well informed, and insightful in all the 27 debate statements announced in advance. The call numbers will be assigned 1-2 hours prior to the first debate of the day. Teams have to report 90 minutes before the commencement of the first debate. One hour before each slot of debate, the debate statement assigned to each debate group will be picked up by way of lotto.

The best one out of the three teams in every debate group will move ahead to Combat stage. At the end of 27 debates conducted with 81 teams, ultimately 27 of the best teams are selected to move on to the Combat Stage.

Nine statements will be given 12-24 hours in advance. Registered teams need to be prepared to argue ‘in favor of’ and ‘against for’ all the nine statements. For competition categories involving participants below 16 years of age, there will be an additional round where the Mentor Teacher of the participating team will ask a question to either one of the opposing teams with the purpose of exposing the lack of preparation, lack of knowledge, or weakness in arguments. This is one round where it could be testing the prospects of a team that may have otherwise performed very well for the first three-four rounds.

In the confrontation stage, nine selected teams will debate three statements announced 2-12 hours in advance. Registered teams need to be prepared to argue ‘in favor of’ and ‘against for’ all the three statements. The confrontation level will have a total of three debates.
