Competition Principles

General Competition Principles

Rules, regulations, and principles governing the conduct of Verbattle competitions.

These principles ensure fairness, educational value, smooth conduct of competitions, and identification of the most deserving participants across all Verbattle events.

Time Management

Time is Essential

Time includes announcement of statements and topics, preparation time, reporting time, punctuality, attendance, time allotted for each round, and respect for time throughout the event.

Flexibility of Time

Although the competition schedule is published in advance, unforeseen circumstances may necessitate modifications. Such changes shall be communicated by the Chief Moderator or an authorised Moderator.

Reporting Time

Participants and teams are expected to report well before their allotted reporting time. Late reporting may be condoned at the discretion of the Moderator. Failure to report may result in forfeiture of that opportunity.

Absence

Participants or teams remaining absent without prior approval shall be treated as having withdrawn from the competition. Such absence shall ordinarily result in forfeiture of the registration fee and disqualification.

Missing Call Numbers

Participants and teams are responsible for remaining alert to announcements regarding their allotted Call Numbers. Failure to appear is ordinarily not condoned unless the Moderator is satisfied the reason is genuine.

Moderator

The Moderator's Authority

The Moderator is the final authority during the conduct of the competition and may make immediate operational decisions based upon circumstances, urgency, logistical requirements, or the overall interests of the competition.

01

Appointment

The Founder and Chief of Verbattle ordinarily serves as the Chief Moderator. In the absence of the Chief Moderator, a designated Moderator or authorised Assistant Moderator shall officiate.

02

Responsibilities

The Moderator is responsible for ensuring smooth conduct of the competition, maintaining fairness, interpreting operational procedures, preserving discipline, guiding participants, and ensuring adherence to Rules and Regulations.

03

Authority

The Moderator may interpret competition procedures, modify operational schedules, resolve issues relating to time, rounds, and conduct, maintain discipline, engage the audience, assist judges, intervene for factual inaccuracies, and stop or suspend debates for serious violations.

Judges

Philosophy of Judging

Verbattle debates encourage participants to explore multiple perspectives rather than merely defend personal opinions. Judges evaluate quality of thinking, preparation, reasoning, communication, and overall performance.

Selection of Judges

Judges are selected for their experience, integrity, decision-making ability, social awareness, and capacity to evaluate competing perspectives fairly.

Judging Panel

Each debate is ordinarily evaluated by two or three judges who independently assess the participating teams. Where teams are closely matched, judges may deliberate before arriving at a final decision.

Independent Evaluation

Judges evaluate participants independently. The final decision rests entirely with the judging panel. Verbattle does not interfere with the evaluation process.

Statements

Debate Statements

01

Preparation of Statements

All Verbattle debate statements, except those created by finalists where applicable, are prepared and approved by the Chief Moderator in consultation with advisers and consultants wherever considered necessary.

02

Nature of Statements

Verbattle statements are intentionally intellectually provocative to encourage analysis, reasoning, and exploration of multiple perspectives. Some may appear politically incorrect, but their purpose is purely educational and intellectual.

03

Legal and Social Considerations

Where appropriate, the Chief Moderator may consult legal or other experts while preparing statements dealing with sensitive subjects.

Objections & Authority

Final Authority

Objections

The decisions of judges are final and are not open to appeal. However, objections relating to the conduct of the audience, opposing teams, moderators, or any procedural irregularity shall be brought to the notice of the Moderator immediately.

Extraordinary Situations

Where a debate cannot be completed because of technical failure, medical emergency, natural calamity, or any other extraordinary circumstance, the Moderator may reschedule the debate.

Authority of Verbattle

The interpretation of all Rules and Regulations, operational decisions, scheduling, competition procedures, exceptional situations, and all matters relating to the conduct of the competition rests solely with Verbattle. The decision of the organisation shall be final.

Fairness and Educational Value

Wherever discretion is exercised by Verbattle, such discretion shall be exercised only in the interest of fairness, educational value, the smooth conduct of the competition, and the identification of the most deserving participants.

The detailed Rules and Regulations governing participant eligibility, conduct, disqualification, and other operational matters are contained in the separate document titled Rules and Regulations.
